Reflections of Winter Into Spring

Updated: Apr 13, 2021

It is hard to believe that January 2017 has come to a close. Being hardy Minnesotans means that if we want to get outside for fresh air, we have to bundle up! So far the winter has been bearable although it would be nice to have a bit more snow to cross country ski, snowshoe and yes even run if the sun is out, >25degrees and no wind!

I have been fortunate to keep my creative energy going the last few weeks working with a prominent home design store in the Visual Design department. It has been fun to view the latest trends coming this spring. Marisa’s Garden will be incorporating these colors and designs into the garden space. Did you know the color to the year is called “Greenery”.

As winter barrels on into its last few weeks, we are dreaming and preparing for our next season of gardening. It is never too early to start planning garden projects so when the warm weather is here we can say ready, set, go!

Here is some inspiration to start your garden planning:

2017 Perennial Plant

Announced by the Perennial Plant Association is the North American native plant,

Butterfly Weed (Asclepias Tuberosa). This plant is significant in a number of ways

  • The leaves are a good food source for monarch butterfly caterpillars

  • Pollinators such as bees and butterflies, enjoy its nectar from the bright orange flowers

  • Easy care for Zones 3-11 with a bloom time from late spring through summer

  • Deer resistant

2017 Annual Plant

Proven Winners has designated the Supertunia® Vista Bubblegum® as their National Plant of the Year. Petunias have been a long time favorite in gardens and planting containers here in Minnesota.

  • Easy care and ever blooming from spring through fall with minimal deadheading

  • Plant in a sunny location for extensive flower coverage

  • Maintain a schedule for fertilizing and watering

“Don’t think the garden loses its ecstasy in winter. It’s quiet but the roots are down there riotous.” - Rumi
